An Evening with Glenn Hughes... in Landskrona.... down by the sea...
What more can you ask for?!
Through a friend on the internet, namely my "long-time" chat friend Lennart, I got to know about this gig in Landskrona, and with no doubt in my mind I decided to drive up to this town see what Glenn had to offer. So off I went with new film in camera, ready for an evening to remember. The place, where Glenn was to kick off his Swedish summer tour, is beautifully situated at the shore of Öresund. When I arrived I got in the mood of taking what would become a rather nice picture of the place, just at sunset.

I didn't feel like going inside yet, and took a walk along the beach.
Inside the band made a sound check (You are the music..). Now that sounded
fantastic... and the hours 'til they hit the stage seemed like ages.
Actually the last day of May would not see Glenn on stage, but the very
first hours of June. The place wasn't more than half full, and even less
people joined up at the stage, giving us who were there an enormous share
each of Glenn's show. So accompanied by the full moon glittering on the sea
outside, Glenn and his band hit the stage. I will not go through the set
list, song by song here, simply because I'm not any good at commenting on
individual and/or collective skilfulness in the performance. I was just
there to enjoy the show, have a good time and soak in the excitement of the
very moment. I hope the pictures tell it all! |

But, a few things remain in mind, among them the face of guitarist
Marsh, when some native Landskrona fella, somewhat over-refreshed, reached
out for Jocke's beer and just knocked it back. Later this guy thought he
could add more to the backing vocals than Jocke and just grabbed his
microphone. It ended with the guy being dragged away by security guys.
Glenn, took the easy way out of beer robbery by sticking to mineral water,
and when offered a beer, just saying: "No thanks, I don't drink!". Cool!

Jocke also had some problems with his guitars. He broke the strap
during Stormbringer, but continued to play standing on one leg holding the
guitar on the other. At one occasion Glenn's comment on Jockes guitar
change was just: "Yeah, Jocke, it was a bit out of tune that one". Last
time I saw Glenn, almost two years ago, he played bass on just a couple of
songs. This time he handled all the bass playing himself, which I think
was great! It seems to, in a way, make him more comfortable. They all
seemed to have great fun together on stage, and Jocke did a really great
show, sharing the spotlights with Glenn, not equally though. |

The show lasted for about one and a half hour, including the two
encores You Fool No One and Burn. All in all a very good show that I
enjoyed immensely. After the show I talked briefly with Jocke, giving him
the results of a poll from CTC (about what songs
the fans wish Glenn to play live). I told him he could just hand it over to Glenn.
Now was the time to reflect about the show that just had ended. So I decided that a
sofa and a Coke (I joined Glenn in the non-alcoholic theme of the night)
would be the right ingredients for that. |
|
|
After a while Jocke came out, with rapid strides heading for the
bar. He looked around and saw me, came over and said: Glenn wants to meet
you!". OK, fair enough I had some time left for a chat ( that was a strong
understatement of what I thought). So he showed me to Glenn's room and
introduced me. So there I was, having a very nice chat with the man that I
only before knew by his music. For me, in situations like that, words do
not come in excess, but Glenn really eased things up, being very friendly.
Need I say, that I left that place with a very big smile on my face?!?!?

The setlist consisted of nothing but oldies. They did mainly Deep
Purple and Trapeze songs with the exception of the odd Hughes/Thrall song.
Here is the complete list (in order):
"Way back to the bone"
(Trapeze) "Muscle and blood" (Hughes/Thrall) "You are the muic,
we're just the band" (Trapeze) "Getting tighter" (Deep
Purple) "First step of love" (Hughes/Thrall) "This time around"
(Deep Purple) "Owed to G" (Deep Purple) "Coast To Coast" (Trapeze,
Hughes/Thrall) "Touch my life" (Trapeze) "Your love is all right"
(Trapeze) "You keep on moving" (Deep Purple) "Stormbringer" (Deep
Purple) ----- encores ----- "You fool no one" (Deep
Purple) "Burn" (Deep Purple)

The lineup was: Glenn Hughes - lead vocals and bass Jocke

In August, I hope I get to see Glenn again, then in Malmö. This
summer in Sweden turns out to be something really special, if you like the
music of Deep Purple and Glenn Hughes! Will I ever again see both twice in
a summer? Probably not!
OK, enough of my rambling. This was more
than I intended to write.
Enjoy the pictures!
