Hi all there,
only a short review.
Last week I received the Glenn Hughes album "Soulful Christmas", I don't
really knew what to expect.
Yes, I like christmas much :-)
But I normaly don't like Christmas-albums much. Either you can hear a
lot of children-choirs or commercial singers/bands with silly
arrangements of christmas-music.
But I risk the chance on ordering this Hughes-CD.
Well, I don't expected a rock-album. But what I've got is very
interesting.
The Hughes-Fan will sure love it. It's more a soul-album, then a X-mas
one.
There is no (on 1 song a little, little) guitar on it, also no
bassguitar.
The instruments are: keyboards (Zermuehlen), saxophone, piano and drums
(sometimes drummachine?).
But the main instrument is Glenn's voice ("The voice of Roc... eeeh,
CHRISTMAS")
The first three songs are really soulsongs, the next a more christmas
ones.
"Ave Maria" is outstanding, with a voice that set tears in my eyes free
- yes, it is very, very tender sung.
On the soul-songs Hughes sings with a voice over several octaves! The
best soulsinging from Hughes I've ever hear.
But caution: the rock-fans will maybe not like this. I think his singing
here is a bow for Stevie Wonder. I've never heard before Glenn singing
so high tones!
The selfwritten (Hughes / Zermühlen) title-track "Soulful Christmas"
sounds like a fine "Play Me Out"-outtake. Great song!
The only song I didn't like much is his interpretation of "Holy Night"
(maybe because I have to sing this every christmas in german.)
If you are a Hughes fan, you have to buy it!
In next year Glenn should bring his second christmas album out: "Rockin'
x-mas". I will buy it!!!!!!
Order it from his page (online release only):

Glenn, thank you very, very much for that wonderful christmas-music!
Looking foreward to "Rockin' x-mas"!
Karl-Heinz
